Nine candidates are elected to the Boston City Council.

They are Thomas I. Atkins, Garrett M. Byrne, William J. Foley Jr., John E. Kerrigan, Frederick C. Langone, Patrick F. McDonough, Gerald F. O’Leary Jr., John L. Saltonstall Jr., Joseph F. Timilty. Saltonstall is the top vote getter with 89,665 votes. Atkins becomes the first African-American to be elected city-wide to the Boston City Council. Katherine “Kitty” Craven is an unsuccessful candidate.
